WE’RE HIRING!
Fathomers is looking for a contract Social Media & Content Manager to shape and execute our social media presence.
This role is about turning long-term, interdisciplinary research and artist-led projects into engaging content while defining a voice that's smart, curious, and grounded.
Working closely with our Deputy Director and Director of Programs & Experiences, you’ll manage our full content lifecycle, including strategy, copywriting, asset preparation, scheduling, partner collabs, community management, and analytics. We’re looking for someone to help us better introduce who we are and what Fathomers does by posting more consistently and developing a wider range of content about our projects, public programs, and process. You’ll bring our audience behind the scenes, turning past and ongoing work with artists, scientists, and collaborators into stories that help build a genuine and active community.
Responsibilities
Strategy & Planning
Work alongside the Deputy Director and Director of Programs & Experiences to refine our social strategy, with a focus on Instagram to start. Balance traditional content (project and program announcements, grant awards, artist milestones) with behind-the-scenes research highlighting our interdisciplinary process.
Content & Scheduling
Plan, draft, and schedule posts and stories to maintain a steady weekly rhythm. Keep our channel active with a mix of research field notes, collaborator spotlights, archival throwbacks, and project updates.
Voice & Copywriting
Write captions that define the Fathomers voice: smart, curious, and grounded.
Design & Creative Coordination
Gather and edit visual assets, working closely with the team to develop a consistent visual language.
Partner Outreach & Collabs
Set up co-authored "collab" posts with artists, scientists, and partner organizations to cross-promote shared projects.
Community Engagement
Manage comments and DMs while maintaining an active presence across the platform by following relevant peers and interacting with posts.
Calendar & Workflows
Keep our Google Comms calendar updated and establish simple, clean workflows for organizing copy, photos, and digital assets.
Analytics & Trends
Track performance to see what resonates, test new ideas to grow our audience, and stay aware of relevant cultural and platform trends.
Compensation & Details
The role begins at approximately 6-8 hours per week at a rate of $50 per hour, with the potential to expand over time. The position is remote, with occasional attendance required in the Los Angeles area for content capture (such as events, programs, and field research).
To Apply
Fathomers strongly encourages candidates from backgrounds generally underrepresented in arts employment to apply, as well as applicants with demonstrated interest in integrated art and science projects.
Please email a single PDF attachment that includes a cover letter, résumé, and portfolio featuring relevant social media content to yes@fathomers.org. The subject line of your email should be Social Media and Content Manager / [Your First and Last Name].
Application screening and remote interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Due to the volume of applicants, candidates will be contacted only if we wish to schedule an interview.
Equal Opportunity
Fathomers is an equal opportunity employer. In its hiring and employment practices, Fathomers does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, physical or mental disability, veteran status, status as a whistleblower, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
Physical Demands
The position principally requires clerical tasks, including frequent computer and cellphone use. Fathomers will make reasonable accommodations in accordance with applicable law.
