Twelve Earths Site Visit

Michael Jones McKean completed a still under-wraps site visit in July 2021. We’re excited and looking ahead to evolving our interaction and engagement with this site and others along the ring in 2022

“Over the past four years, so many of Twelve Earths’ processes have been directed inward, existing (necessarily) outside of public view so as to slowly build an internal logic with strong valent connections to people, place, and matter. Working in the shadows for so long has been both intoxicating and, as it goes, dizzying. In the new year, we’re excited to bring into light deeper additional details about the project.

This past Summer, Michael was able to visit one of Twelve Earths’ sites to spend time with a group of archaeologists that have been working on an excavation site for over 20 years. Their discovery, though rooted in science, reaches palpably into all of us, asking questions that are destabilizing in their vastness: How might we care for each other? What of the afterlife? How has the category of “human” come to be?”

Twelve Earths continues to move and mature on multiple fronts: a new film component is now in progress, the Center for Art + Environment has committed to securing Twelve Earths’ growing archive within the context of their historic Earthwork/Land Art and Indigenous Art Archives, and additional site visits are on the horizon for the new year. We look forward to sharing more soon and to continue being a conduit for these connections.
