GETTY MARROW INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Join Fathomers for summer 2021

With generous support from the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program, Fathomers is pleased to announce a new opportunity for a Curatorial Intern for summer 2021.
The Intern will join Fathomers primarily to assist with key curatorial and planning activities for Emergence: A Genealogy, a global bioart survey supported by Pacific Standard Time, to be presented at the Japanese American Community and Cultural Center in fall 2024. The exhibition and a related publication will together examine and contextualize visions and iterations of the future human as seen through the lenses of biotechnology and bioart, with research strongly inflected by global perspectives, questions of biopolitics, and the systemic silencing and erasure of voices of color in medicine and the biosciences.
We plan for 70 percent of the Intern’s time to be devoted to Emergence, with responsibilities including:
Research of key themes;
Meetings with the curatorial team;
Compilation of dossiers on foundational works from early bio artists;
Assembly of documents, plans, and interviews with scientists, engineers, and members of the biotech revolution;
Potential collaborator outreach; and
Planning of an adjacent program and/or advisory council convening.
The remaining 30 percent of the Intern’s time will include curatorial research for Fathomers’ additional projects; shadowing full-time staff members; learning about key nonprofit operations; and participating in external communications.
In the final week of the term, the intern will make a presentation about their research (in addition to a required written summary) for an audience of Fathomers staff and collaborators.

About Getty Marrow
Aiming to encourage greater diversity in the professions related to museums and the visual arts, the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program in Los Angeles supports substantive, full-time summer work opportunities for college undergraduates from cultural backgrounds that have traditionally been underrepresented in the arts. Since the program began in 1993, 161 local arts institutions, including the Getty, have hosted over 3,300 internships, exposing students to career possibilities in the arts. Originally titled the Multicultural Undergraduate Internship program, its name changed in late 2018 with announcement of the retirement of long-time Getty Foundation director Deborah Marrow, who began the program.
